Grade 1 Transportation for the 2016-2017 School Year

Grade 1 Bussing:  2016-17 Students only QUALIFY for bussing in gr. 1 if they live 1.2 km or more from school (previously 600 m)

Regina Public Schools, effective 2016-17 school year, will be changing its transportation procedures for Grade 1 students. You will have been contacted by letter if this change applies to your family. If you did not receive a letter, but think this applies to you, please contact your principal.

Here are some of the details of the changes, for your information. Starting with the 2016-17 school year, only Grade 1 students who reside or whose caregivers reside more than 1,200 metres from their designated school will be eligible for transportation. This is a change from previous years where the distance from school requirement was 600 metres.

Transportation eligibility is based on Regina Public Schools Administrative Procedure and guidelines, as outlined below:

  • Eligibility for Regular Program transportation includes the following:

  1. Students must reside inside the transportation services area for the designated school,
  2. Students must be enrolled and attending their designated school,
  3. Kindergarten students who reside 0.6 km or farther from the designated elementary school are eligible for transportation,
  4. Other elementary school students who reside 1.2 km or farther from the designated elementary school are eligible for transportation.

Please be aware, however, that students may be eligible for an exception for transportation based on the guidelines listed below.

  1. Exceptions may be permitted on Regular Program school buses but not on Regular Program light vehicle transportation (cabs, vans),
  2. Exceptions may be permitted for students attending their designated school only if,
  3. The existing stop is more than 1,000 metres from the designated school,
  4. The student walks to an existing stop and there is room available on the school bus, and
  5. The student is in grade 1 to grade 5.

Exceptions will only be granted if doing so will not affect the safety, economy or efficiency of the transportation service.

If you have any questions, please don’t hesitate to contact your principal.

ATTENTION: GRADE 7 - 10 STUDENTS:

Mathematics Problem Solving Sessions held at the University of Regina.

 MONDAYS 6 - 8 PM

in the University's Riddell Center, room RC 286

September 21st, October 5th, October 19th, November 2nd, November 16th, November 30th

The focus of these sessions is twofold:

1)  These sessions are an opportunity for students with an interest in mathematics to meet each other and be exposed to a range of  mathematical subjects that would not be covered in the standard high school curriculum.

2)  Students can work toward participation in mathematics competitions (ie. the University of Waterloo Competitions or the Math Kangaroo contests.)

The session dates for Fall 2015 are as follows (all Mondays, 6-8 PM):
September 21st,
October 5th, October 19th, November 2nd, November 16th, November 30th

As always, attendance is free. Each session is an independent unit, so you can come to as few or as many of them as you wish. However, if you are planning to come to any session, please send us an e-mail in advance so that we know how many copies of problem sets to bring.

Finally, while we primarily tailor material to students in Grades 7-10, we can accept students in slightly higher or lower grades. If you are outside of the Grade 7-10 range, please contact us first.

Once again, no formal registration is required, but please:
1) Send me an email if you are definitely planning to attend the first session.
2) Let me know if you wish to be removed from this mailing list.

 Best wishes,
Patrick Maidorn

We are thrilled to share that the Early Years Family Centres have been selected as the recipient of the Regina Tim Horton's Smile Cookie Program this month.  The program runs Sept 14th to 20th and 100% of the cookie sales will be directed to the EYFC.  These funds will help us continue to offer drop-in and scheduled programs at our three wonderful spaces for the children and families in our community.  You may or may not know that  we currently operate on short term grants and projects dollars as well as in-kind support from several organizations so fundraising opportunities like this are essential to our future.   I would invite you to consider how you might be able to support this campaign - perhaps a treat for yourself, treats for a meeting you have planned during that time, sharing this news with others .....

Wishing you a wonderful start to the new school year,
Lynda
