Principal's June Message

Principal’s Message
June 2015

Another school year is coming to an end. June is a busy month filled with busy days completing projects and assignments, year-end assessments, numerous year end activities and preparations for the 2015-2016 school year.

Our school track meet was held at Sheldon Collegiate for the first time this year.   It was a wonderful day and we look forward to holding future track meets there.    The Douglas Park track meet for winners from the school meets will meet be taking place at Douglas Park. Our Chess Club ended with a tournament. Many of our students achieved excellent scores in the University of Waterloo Math Gauss tests. We have a lot to celebrate.

We would like to thank our School Community Council (SCC) which has been extremely active in providing support and recruiting helpers for a multitude of tasks. Thank you for enriching the lives of our students and staff. Please join me in thanking Lynette Farquhar her time and commitment to the Massey SCC over the years. We have greatly appreciated her continued support and efforts. I would also like to thank Amy McGregor for taking on the role of Vice-chair this year.  We wish you luck in you endeavors. Please see the list of the new SCC members on our school website. We welcome all of the new members and look forward to working with the new executive.

We would like to thank all of our parent and community volunteers. We have appreciated all of your support. Many of the school activities provided to students could not have happened without your support. As a thank-you gesture to all of our volunteers, we will be having a special breakfast tea for all of you in the school gym on June 19th.  You will be receiving an invitation shortly. We have dedicated new books to our school library in your names. If you look inside some of the book covers, you will find a large dedication sticker of volunteers from your child`s class.

There will be a few changes to our staff next year. We have a number of teachers on maternity leave or going on maternity leave.  Mme Leask and Mme Sweeney will be away for part of the year.  Mme Exner will be away until the Fall of 2016.  We wish them well with their new babies.

We have new staff coming in as well. Mme Kirsh (Gr. 2), Mme Beckel (.30 Gr. 3), Mme Chabot-Greenwood (Gr. 3), Mme McCashin (Gr. 4).  Mme Osborne will be teaching Gr. 5/6 until Mme Sweeney’s return.  Mme Chabot-Greenwood will be teaching Gr. 3 until Mme Leask’s return. Mme Jamieson will be teaching Gr. 6 until Mme Exner’s return in Sept. 2016.

Next year, we will continue to have 3 teacher assistants. Their names have not yet been announced.  The EAs will be scheduled into various classrooms on a rotating schedule to support students that need extra help. The staff list will be available in the next week and will be posted on the school website.

A few days before the school opening, parents and students will be able to access the class placements on Parent Portal.  Please see our administrative assistant, Erin Mulligan, if you need the password and instructions to access the portal.  Please remember that these placements are made carefully by the team of teachers, support staff and administration and are made with the children’s best interest as a whole and as individuals.

Parents have received an email from Erin Mulligan regarding School Start.  This is the new online program to order school supplies for next year.  Please take a look at this email and place your orders online if possible. There is a deadline for ordering.  These supply lists will be made available on our school website at the end of the school year to assist parents who have missed the deadline or who prefer to select the school supplies with their child in August.

As you can see in the summer activities listed in the newsletter and the school website, there are opportunities for your child to participate in a French camp or two during the summer. This would be a wonderful way to provide your child with an opportunity to practice his/her spoken French in an authentic way this summer, an opportunity to use the French skills that he/she is working so hard to build.

To those families who are moving on, please inform your child’s classroom teacher as soon as possible to facilitate our planning for next year.  We thank-you for your association with École Massey School and wish you happiness and success in your new homes, schools, and communities. We will miss you.

Ecole Massey NATIVE PLANT GARDEN NEEDS VOLUNTEERS: please contact Amy McGregor ( Merci!

Did you know Ecole Massey has a Native Plant Garden?

Volunteers are needed to help rejuvenate and enhance this space for students to enjoy at recess and even to use as an outdoor classroom for many years to come. As the first project of its kind, it will be used as a model for other Regina schools as well.

We need help with:

-   Spring weeding and mulching

-   Possible installation of a pergola and signage

-   Watering in new plantings

-   Establishing a regular watering schedule

-   Coordinating this work

The garden is located on the North side of the property between the staff parking lot and the playground, and it already has:

-   a design, established trees and shrubs, fences, pathway, garden boxes, other smaller plants

-   high quality tools (wheel barrows, hoses, etc.)

-   funding from World Wildlife Foundation (WWF), Cooperators, Saskatchewan Outdoor Environment Education Association (SOEEA) available to purchase Pergola, mulch, landscape fabric, possibly more plants.

 - a group in place to support the project including: the garden founder Laurel LaBar-Ahmed who's a former Ecole Massey teacher, Massey teacher Dale Meister, Permaculture Regina, GreenRoots, and the Campbell Collegiate Enviro Club

To get involved, please contact Amy McGregor ( Merci!
